Six things Arvada homeowners notice, and the part behind each one

Most calls to our Arvada number start with something you can see or smell. Here is where it usually comes from.

Smoke rolls back into the roomDamper and draft

A damper that no longer opens fully, a blocked flue or a tight modern house all cut the draft that should carry exhaust upward. On a cold Arvada morning the smoke takes the easier path and comes back at you.

The fix: check the damper plate and frame, clear the flue, then correct what is choking the airflow.

Water stain on the ceiling beside the chimneyFlashing and the leak path

Hail and the wind that comes down off the foothills work counterflashing loose from the masonry. The gap is invisible from the driveway, and water runs down the framing before it ever shows on the ceiling.

The fix: find the real entry point first, then seal or rebuild it instead of smearing tar over the top.

Cracks across the slab on top of the chimneyThe crown

The crown is the concrete slab that sheds water off the top of the masonry. Once it cracks, every rain and every snowmelt runs straight into the brick below it instead of off the edge.

The fix: repair or recast the crown so water drips clear of the chimney again.

Mortar joints crumbling, brick faces flakingFreeze and thaw damage

Water soaks into mortar and brick, then freezes overnight and expands. Front Range mornings below freezing and afternoons in the sixties repeat that cycle until joints wash out and brick faces pop off.

The fix: cut out the failed joints, repoint with matching mortar and stop the water getting in.

Soot smell on warm humid daysDeposits in the flue

Warm damp air meets creosote deposits on the flue wall, and a house under negative pressure pulls that air down into the living room instead of up the chimney.

The fix: a full sweep of the flue, firebox and smoke shelf, then a look at what is pulling air backwards.

Shiny black tar on the flueStage 3 creosote glaze

Glazed creosote is hardened tar stuck to the liner wall. A brush slides straight over it, which is why a chimney can be swept and still carry a heavy, flammable deposit.

The fix: a chemical modifier applied first, then mechanical removal and a check of the liner underneath.

What we do for Arvada chimneys and fireplaces

From a routine sweep before the first cold night to rebuilding masonry that has given up.

Every service below is handled by our own team, dispatched from our Arvada office on Joyce Drive.

Chimney flue ready for sweeping and creosote removal in Arvada01

Chimney cleaning and sweeping

Creosote, the tar-like byproduct of burning wood, builds on the flue wall in stages. We remove it at every stage, including hardened glaze that has to be chemically treated before a brush will touch it. Floor protection goes down first and the soot leaves with us.

Chimney inspection in progress at an Arvada home02

Chimney inspection

A Level 1 inspection covers the readily accessible parts of the system and suits a chimney in regular use with no known problems. A Level 2 adds a camera scan of the flue interior and is what you want when a home is being sold, after a chimney fire, or when the appliance or fuel changes.

Masonry and structural repair

Repointing washed-out mortar joints, rebuilding cracked crowns, replacing failed brick and, where the damage runs deeper, rebuilding the stack itself. Older Olde Town chimneys and newer Leyden Rock builds fail in different ways, so we price the repair off what the inspection actually shows.

Sealed chimney crown fitted with a stainless chimney cap04

Leaks and water protection

We trace a leak to its source before anything gets sealed. Most of the time it is the crown, the flashing line or a missing cap letting rain and snowmelt drop straight down the flue. Sealing without finding the path is a patch that fails by the next storm.

Fireplace repair underway with cloth floor protection laid down05

Fireplace work

New fireplace installation, gas fireplace inspection and repair, damper replacement and refacing an old firebox surround so it fits the room again. The firebox and damper get looked at on every fireplace call, because that is where most of the complaints start.

Raccoon on top of an Arvada chimney before animal removal06

Animals and blockages

Birds, squirrels and raccoons move into open flues along the greenbelts and older streets every spring. We remove the animal and the nesting material, clean out what is left, then fit a cap so the next one cannot get in.

Chimney being rebuilt and relined07

Relining and rebuilds

A cracked or missing liner is the one problem you cannot see from inside the house and cannot safely ignore. We reline with the right size for the appliance, and when the masonry above the roof is past saving we rebuild it rather than keep patching.

The Front Range is hard on Arvada chimneys

Chimney work here is not the same job it is in a milder climate.

Arvada sits in Jefferson County on the western edge of the Denver metro, close enough to the foothills to catch the wind and the hail that come with it. Spring mornings drop below freezing while afternoons climb into the sixties. Water sitting in mortar joints freezes, expands and works them apart, year after year, until the joints wash out and the crown cracks.

Altitude matters too. The metro sits around a mile above sea level, where thinner air changes how a fire draws. A flue that burned cleanly for years can start spilling smoke back into the room without anything looking obviously wrong from the outside.

That is why we start with what the chimney is actually doing and photograph the parts you cannot see, instead of selling a fix before anyone has been on the roof.

Of creosote we check for on every visit

An Arvada address. Our own crew. No middlemen.

Every job is done by AR Chimney Pros technicians, with no subcontracting and no franchise handoffs.

Our Arvada office is at 6275 Joyce Drive, Suite 237, off Highway 93 near the Jefferson County line, so we are inside the neighbourhoods we serve rather than driving in from the far side of the metro.

We answer the Arvada line Sunday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, and we are closed Saturdays.

Chimneys here vary a lot. A brick stack on an older Olde Town house behaves nothing like a prefabricated chase on a newer Leyden Rock build. Sweeping, relining, crown work and gas fireplace diagnostics are all handled in house, so one visit can cover the whole system.

What a visit looks like

  1. 1You describe what you are seeing and we book a window that works for you.
  2. 2We lay floor protection before anything comes out of the firebox.
  3. 3We photograph the crown, cap, flashing, liner and firebox, then walk you through what we found.
  4. 4You get the findings in writing, with any repairs quoted separately from the visit.
