Fireplace Inserts Explained: Turning an Open Hearth Into a Real Heat Source
An open masonry fireplace is a wonderful thing to look at and a poor way to heat a house. Most of the warmth goes up the flue, and the fire pulls heated household air along with it, drawing cold replacement air in through every gap in the building. A fireplace insert changes that equation. It is a sealed firebox that fits into the existing masonry opening and connects to a properly sized liner running up the chimney. The tradeoffs are the ones wood always brings: you have to load it, tend it, and deal with ash, and you need dry, seasoned fuel and an annual sweep. Gas Inserts

The limitation is fuel dependence. Most gas inserts need electricity for the blower, though many will still produce radiant heat without it if they have a standing pilot or battery backup ignition.
Pellet Inserts
A middle path. Pellet inserts burn compressed wood pellets fed automatically from a hopper, so you get wood heat with thermostat-style control and a long burn time between refills. They burn cleanly and the fuel stores neatly in bags. They do require electricity to run the auger and blower, and they have more moving parts than the other two types.
Why the Liner Is Not Optional
This is the part of the job homeowners tend to underestimate, and it is the part that determines whether the installation is safe.
An existing masonry flue was sized for an open fireplace, which produces a large volume of relatively hot exhaust. An insert produces a much smaller volume of cooler exhaust. Vent that into an oversized flue and the gases slow down and cool as they rise. Cool, slow-moving exhaust condenses on the flue walls, which accelerates creosote buildup in wood systems and causes corrosive condensation in gas systems.

- Setting the insert and finishing. The unit is positioned, connected, and trimmed with a surround. Gas units are connected to the fuel supply and tested; wood units get their surround sealed.

Sizing, and Why Bigger Is Not Better
An oversized insert is a common and expensive mistake. Run a unit that is too large for the space and you will be forced to operate it at a low, smoldering output to keep the room bearable. Smoldering is exactly the condition that produces the most creosote in a wood appliance and the most soot in a gas one. A correctly sized unit run at proper output is cleaner, more efficient, and more pleasant to live with.
Sizing depends on the square footage you actually intend to heat, the insulation and air sealing of the house, ceiling heights, and how open the floor plan is.
